Lumichron’s Tower Clock Renewal Services

A standard fixture on almost every country courthouse are the clocks. It’s now possible to retain the original appearance of the antique clocks, but have them perform in perfect unison with Atomic Time – GPS synchronized. With no regular maintenance for many years, they can work perfectly for hands-free operation; often with a new electromagnetic bell striker if required.

Tower Clock Restoration & Renewal Process

Typically the old cast iron/aluminum/bronze elements are removed and re-finished to spec. New panes installed, either of translucent white sign-grade polycarbonate, acrylic or glass. The elements are then re-installed with new heavy-duty impulse-driven clock movements coupled with a GPS synchronized clock controller.

Replacement Parts & Service

  • Clock dial restoration with metal re-finishing and new translucent panes
  • Heavy-duty impulse-driven clock movements
  • New clock hands to replicate original design
  • GPS synchronized clock controller
  • New electromagnetic bell striker(s) if applicable
  • New LED light panels for nighttime backlighting
  • The new dials are sealed and weather-tight

Considerations for Tower Clock Renewal

  • The functionality of the clocks may take precedence over preserving the mechanism
  • Mechanical clockworks can require frequent maintenance, and it can be a challenge to find skilled workers
  • Modern electronic clockworks are automatically controlled and maintenance free
  • The antique mechanical clockworks are sometimes saved for public display

    COURTHOUSE CLOCK RESTORATION

Lumichron completely restored the four clocks on the clock tower at the
Oconto County Courthouse. The four original 100-year-old clocks at the beautiful Romanesque Revival-style courthouse hadn’t kept good time for years, and some parts were missing. Lumichron replaced the old wood hands with new hands made of heavy-duty aluminum with a durable powdercoat finish. We found special art glass to replace some of the broken and missing panes in the cast-iron face. The cast-iron dial also was refinished and repaired. And Lumichron installed a new striker system for the cast bronze bell.  The new movement and controller keep all four of the 7-foot diameter clocks in sync with each other and with atomic time.

As part of the project, Lumichron installed an LED light system to improve the illumination of the dials at night, replacing the old yellow mercury vapor lights. The illumination turns on at dusk and off at dawn, and is controlled by the clock controller.  “It’s brighter and it looks nice,” said administrative coordinator Kevin Hamann.

Oconto is one of the oldest settlements in Wisconsin, and the county was named for a Native American settlement, whose name meant “plentiful with fish”. A plaque on the doorway of the Courthouse features a log and a fish, representing the two main industries of the area.

NEW CLOCKS FOR A HISTORICAL TOWER

Exterior brick building with enclosed canister clocks in clock tower

For the first time, the clock tower at the Sidney Yates Building in Washington, D.C.  includes tower clocks! The building, which was originally completed in 1879, was designed with round 60-inch diameter openings for clocks, but none were ever installed until Lumichron was contracted to design and build illuminated, automatically controlled clocks. The brick had even settled a bit over the 137+ years making the openings not quite completely round! The stand-out red brick Romanesque building originally housed the Bureau of Engraving. It is now the permanent home of the U.S. Forest Service. In 1999 the building was named in honor of Congressman Sidney R. Yates (1963-1999), and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

    CLOCK TOWER RENOVATION

Clock Tower at Longwood University’s Lancaster Hall

The clock tower atop Longwood University’s Lancaster Hall was recently repaired and renovated, which was the first major work to the tower since the building opened in 1939. Lumichron restored all four clock faces and replaced the hour and minute hands on each face; the clock mechanism was upgraded to an electronic system; and we installed a new bell striker. The clocks include a new LED system, providing lighting behind each clock face. The clock controller turns the illumination on at dusk, and off at dawn; it keeps track of the time throughout the seasons.
